In Disguise

You were so lonely
you asked the earth if you could get under its skin
not understanding the nature of irritants
or the rash of urban sprawl.

You were so sad
you went into the kitchen
and cooked enough food for fifty
sure their attendance would cure
your sadness and loneliness
as the internet failed to do.

You painted
a sea monster on the ocean
and managed to sustain it
on the third wave-crest from the shore
apparently to scare the children
away from the sand
where you liked to pitch your shade
for an afternoon with a book
about the newer mysteries,
which are really quite old
and in disguise.
