Bookends

Delphi painted
the twelve apostles
casting the nets of faith
and hauling in people.

If you look closely
the lines of the nets
are formed by the word Love
repeated in small script.

At none of the nets
do the apostles
throw the young back
into the sea of people to grow.

On the left side of the canvas
Delphi adds Alphaeus
father of the apostle James.

On the right side of the canvas
she adds Alphaeus
father of the apostle Matthew.

There is something
in the fathers’ color and posture
that suggests
they wished for daughters.
