Paul’s fingers stretch
paper over a balsa wood frame.
Fabricates a British
bi-wing aeroplane.

The instructions
are like music on a page.
More a suggestion
to someone who creates jazz.

Glue clogs his fingerprints.
Paint spots his hands and clothes.
The propeller spins
with the flick of a finger.

Suspended from the ceiling
a dog fight begins
to take shape
as planes are added.

The last to arrive
is Richthofen
in his bright red
Fokker triplane.
