I would like to say
my Plattsburgh
New York ancestors
helped the passengers
north of the border
into Canada.
Family history
showed an indifference
to those whose sir names
were striped on them
through the masters
ungentle hand.
Though, I did not find
a single diary entry
that expressed compliance
to James Murry Mason’s
fugitive slave act
and its immoral burden
on a Christian soul.
