No Animals Were Injured Writing this Poem

After frigid air
swooped down
from the north
without warning
the ducks froze
to the lake surface.

A coyote
who thought an easy meal
close at hand
fell through to a splash
adjacent to all
the quacking
and excited flap.

Three hundred goats
lined the lake edge
huddled together
pressed into warmth
and awaited the thaw.
