Shielded Against the Weather

They never understood that guilt was their partner
in crimes against humanity.

They reasoned it was a freak lightning storm
that lit the oily rags of memory.

They were frantic and deranged
loaded into wagons and taken away.

They clung to the future and hoarded its dream.
To camps they went and occupied white tents.
