Broken Adobe Under a Bald Star

A straight road cuts through
a hundred and fifty miles of desert.

It smells like heated rubber and oil.
The desert smells like sage.

City people require a long time
to grow accustom to the desert emptiness.

Especially the lack of pervasive sound.
Emptiness has its own sound.

Often that sound is buzzing insects
like deer flies.

The road-janitors come through
once a week

to clean the dead off the asphalt
and the side of the road.

The dead account for much
of the new buzzing.

Some people I meet think
the desert heat will melt their fat

so it runs like grease dripping from meat
on a grill and into the flames.

The straight road exists for the power lines
that carry electricity

from the coal plant, solar arrays
and wind farms

as modernization takes its place
in the desert.

Thunder From The Crossroads

During the battle of Gettysburg
at the railroad cut
Rufus Dawes and the Sixth Wisconsin
stopped at the lip
and called down
for the Confederates to surrender
instead of firing
at these grey ducks
caught in an earthen barrel.

I said this because
I wanted you to know
that men are capable of such
clear thinking and restraint
during the maelstrom of battle
and we should set our expectations higher
for human behavior.

I believe you think
modern man incapable
of such courage through inaction
especially with studies
that count the educated
as moving farthest from the bible.

But I think it is peer pressure—
not religion—that motivates
people to Keep up with the Jones
especially in matters of power—
its acquisition and application
contrary to the ideal
of equal treatment under the law.

Rant (13 Jun 2021)

When pharmaceutical drugs
are as easy to get as checking
a book out of the library
you know the fix is in
and the result will not be good.

Although I find hope painful
I still hope for a better outcome.

I am talking about the big picture.

The corruption of money and power
has taken hold of these United States
to disunite the population
because chaos is quite creative
while being destructive
at the same time.

There are so many ways to be angry.
And so many actions to be angry at.

The second amendment is not a solution.
Yet.

If the only thing we have to fear is fear itself
the media assembly line should halt production.

Fear is this generation’s blue light special
mass marketed on television
and available at big box stores and gun shops.

Baby boomers remain babies
stuck in me-generation mentalities
that shred the constitution
under a zero-sum game mentality
that missed the economic expansion
when women liberated themselves
into the workforce.
