Paul’s second job
is to sweep up the sadness
from the funeral home’s room
where memorial services
and viewings are held.

The push broom supplied
by the funeral home owner
was hardly adequate for the chore
of sweeping up sadness,
since sadness tended to flow
like water around its edges.

Paul found a thick hard layer
of empty nothingness on the floor
that the push broom
could not move at all.

He was surprised to find it there.
He assumed the grieving
held empty nothingness
closer to the heart than sadness.
